Introduction: In high-speed optical transceivers of 100G and above, especially coherent optical transceivers and silicon photonics transceivers, PM FAU (Polarization-Maintaining Fiber Array Unit) serves as the "key hub" for ensuring the stable transmission of polarized optical signals. Different from ordinary FAUs that only realize high-density coupling of optical signals, PM FAU uses special polarization axis alignment technology to accurately arrange polarization-maintaining fibers in fixed polarization directions (e.g., 0°/90°). While enabling parallel transmission of multi-channel optical signals, it effectively avoids polarization state crosstalk, providing core support for the signal integrity of high-speed optical modules.
Its core technical advantages focus on three aspects: First, high-precision polarization alignment. Through precision mechanical processing and optical calibration, the polarization axis alignment error can be controlled within ±1°, ensuring the polarization state of polarized optical signals remains stable during transmission. The minimum single-mode polarization-maintaining insertion loss is only 0.5dB, and the return loss exceeds 55dB. Second, high-density integration. It supports multi-channel designs such as 8CH and 16CH, and the channel spacing can be customized according to module requirements (e.g., 250μm, 500μm), adapting to the packaging of miniaturized optical transceivers. Third, high environmental adaptability. Adopting ceramic V-groove and metal shell packaging, it can withstand a wide temperature working environment from -40℃ to 85℃, with excellent anti-vibration and anti-shock performance, meeting the long-term stable operation needs of complex scenarios such as data centers and 5G base stations.The PM FAU utilizes birefringence and an asymmetric structure to achieve an extinction ratio of ≥20 dB and a polarization axis deviation within ±3°, complying with the Telcordia GR-1221-CORE reliability standard.
