Introduction: A lens fiber is a new type of optical fiber device that features a microlens structure fabricated on the end face of a conventional optical fiber through special processes (such as grinding, photolithography, and laser processing). Its core function is to optimize the efficiency of optical signal transmission and reception, solve the loss problem of traditional optical fibers in optical coupling, and is widely used in fields such as optical communication, sensing, and lidar.
Its core advantage lies in its optical control capability: the microlens can precisely adjust the spot size and divergence angle, compressing the divergence angle of the light emitted by the fiber from tens of degrees (typical of conventional optical fibers) to within a few degrees. This concentrates the optical signal, enabling an insertion loss as low as 0.1dB or less when coupling with devices like optical chips, detectors, and lens arrays—far outperforming the coupling effect of traditional optical fibers. Additionally, lens fibers support single-mode and multi-mode optical fiber substrates, and can be customized into different microlens shapes (such as spherical, aspherical, and cylindrical) to adapt to various packaging spaces and optical field requirements.
In application scenarios, lens fibers serve as the "coupling bridge" for high-speed optical modules, facilitating efficient connection between optical fibers and silicon photonic chips in 100G/400G silicon photonic modules; in the lidar field, their low-loss and small-size characteristics make them suitable for compact spaces like vehicle-mounted systems; in optical fiber sensing, they can enhance the sensitivity of weak optical signal collection. With their high coupling efficiency and flexible customizability, lens fibers have become a key enabler for promoting the miniaturization and high-performance development of optoelectronic devices.
